Sunflower hearts have the highest energy content per weight of any of the popular bird foods. The husks have already been removed so there is no mess and most species can eat them.
Plastic (polycarbonate) feeders rather than wire mesh ones should be used to keep the hearts reasonably dry otherwise then can go mouldy quite quickly.
